Fargo, ND (AP) Actor Peter Fonda says he was “sorry” when he tweeted that President Donald Trump is an ape and “sends a message of hate to the American people.”
Fonda, who starred in the FX series Fargo, has been suspended from his acting job with FX after he called Trump an “ape” and “a racist.”
Fargo co-creator Michael Green has called the comments “racist” and a “disgusting act of hate.”
In a statement to The Associated Press, Fonda said he was speaking out because of the “terrible bigotry and prejudice that still exists in our country.”
He added: “It was never my intention to be offensive or to incite violence against any group of people, but I do believe there is still much work to be done.”
The statement did not mention whether the president’s office had received the tweets.
The president has denied using the term.
